Bioanalytical Laboratory Facility Design + Construction

PRA Health Sciences Location: Lenexa, Kansas Square Footage: 48,000 Construction Cost: 9,000,000

PRA Health Sciences, a global drug development partner, had a vision for its new bioanalytical laboratory facility: To create a space that encourages collaboration and is flexible and efficient in order to help facilitate life advancing therapies across the globe.

PRA’s vision became a reality in the new 48,000-square-foot-facility designed and constructed by CRB. The new space, strategically located in Lenexa, Kansas is near PRA’s clinical research unit to enable faster drug development decision making.

Positioned for growth

The new facility was built with a modular concept in order to grow current services as well as anticipate expansion into new scientific processes. CRB leveraged its strategic facility planning and operations improvement experts to help PRA analyze its existing operations and growth drivers and translate that into the needed square footage for the new facility.

Flexibility and Efficiency

To achieve PRA’s goals, the space needed to be as flexible and efficient as possible. The labs in the new facility are highly flexible, allowing research teams to reconfigure spaces in response to changing sponsor needs and new research directions. The new laboratory is three times larger than the previous space, resulting in a 49 percent increase in sample throughput while still reducing the walking time for staff by 30 percent.

Open Up

The building celebrates the PRA brand and the work PRA does. The idea of “science on display” is evident throughout the building—maximizing views into the lab and equipment spaces. This benefits the staff and helps facilitate client tours without disrupting lab operations. Community spaces include the lobby, reception area, boardroom and a variety of meeting rooms that form a “main street” near the entrance to ease access control. Huddle space and staff meeting rooms are distributed throughout the plan, including space within the laboratory environment for quick collaboration without having to change out of lab coats.

ONEsolution™

CRB delivered this project with a unique, full-service delivery method that streamlined the communication process between CRB and PRA, which enabled the project to be delivered on time and under budget. Despite early delays with the permit process, CRB met PRA’s critical turnover date eight months after construction began. CRB took a collaborative approach with PRA’s management, third-party representative and trade contractors to develop creative and cost-effective solutions throughout construction without unnecessary and costly time delays.
