BIOFUELS PILOT PLANTProject Description:

CRB provided process, process utility, mechanical and plumbing engineering services as the design professional of record under direct contract to the design-build process-mechanical piping contractor on this fast-track pilot plant project. The pilot plant was designed to create biofuels from sugar 

cane utilizing microbial fermentation. The fuel, formulated biologically through sugar fermentation, will emit almost no sulfur and will discharge less nitrogen oxide than conventional diesel.

CRB's scope of work included process equipment engineering based on end user requirements; process and mechanical utility load analysis; preparation of process equipment and utility system generation and distribution P&IDs and equipment purchase specifications; bid evaluation and award; and engineering services during construction.

In order to increase project efficiency, CRB assisted the contractor to prepare the piping and plumbing plans and isometrics directly from CRB's P&IDs. New equipment and systems specified for the project included media preparation and collection vessels, CIP, process gases including hydrogen, nitrogen and compressed dry air, process vacuum, purified water, clean steam, process chilled water, domestic and industrial hot and cold water, plant steam, natural gas, sanitary and process waste and a combination waste neutralization/high pH biokill system. All systems were designed to address sanitary system design while limiting extraneous validation and documentation normally associated with regulated cGMP biotechnology facilities.
