Communication Center

Johnson County, Kansas Location: Olathe, Kansas Square Footage: 46,000 Construction Cost: $21,000,000

Project Description

CRB provided the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering for this communication center. The facility is a two-story storm-hardened mission-critical structure designed to withstand an F-4 tornado with a 4,500 sq. ft. computer equipment room and 7,500 sq. ft.

of dispatching area, along with offices and conference rooms, training classrooms and shower facilities.

The building systems consisted of under-floor air conditioning for dispatch, offices and classrooms, one packaged water-cooled computer room unit and one split DX-cooled computer room unit, electric heating systems, underground fuel oil storage, air-cooled chiller, lighting, normal power and UPS power systems, emergency generators, security systems, and pre-action dry, wet and clean agent fire protection systems. The project included a central plant chilled water system design that used variable speed air-cooled York chillers and a variable speed primary chilled water pumping system. The chilled water system has expansion capabilities for a future crime lab building built adjacent to the communication center.

Emergency power was provided in the communication center through UPS and emergency generators so that vital systems would not be interrupted.

CRB provided energy modeling for the communication center. The facility received gold LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
