Data Processing Center

American Century Investors Location: Kansas City, Missouri Square Footage: 18,000 Construction Cost: Confidential

Project Description:

This project required a complete design for an 18,000 sq. ft. data processing center, requiring approximately 200 tons of refrigeration and 2,000 kVA of electrical power. The project required the design of an electrical distribution system, beginning with a 13.2-kV to 480V, 2,000-kVA unit substation;

a 900-kVA upgraded to a 1,200-kVA, 60-hz parallel redundant UPS system; 300-kVA, 415-hz frequency conversion utilizing parallel “pillar” motor generators, 1,000-kVA standby emergency engine generator with automatic transfer equipment, computer room power distribution units (PDUs) for power distribution, branch circuitry for all data processing equipment, smoke and fire detection and alarm equipment, liquid detection alarm system, card access and security system for controlled access.

The cooling system consisted of approximately 200 tons of water-cooled computer room air conditioning units located in the data processing area and UPD areas with a condenser water piping system and modular cooling towers on the roof with a 100-ton back-up cooling tower. The condenser water system included automatic transfer back-up condenser water pumps. A fuel oil storage tank with fuel oil piping, day tank and fuel oil pumps was included for the fuel supply to the standby emergency generator.
