Distribution Center Relocation and Office Expansion

ACell Location: Columbia, Maryland Square Footage: 15,000 Construction Cost: $1,320,000
ACell Inc. is a leading regenerative medicine company focused on the development, manufacture and commercialization of medical devices for wound management and surgical soft tissue repair. Due to recent growth, ACell retained CRB to help with an expansion project at its corporate headquarters in Columbia, Maryland.

CRB provided ONEsolution™ (design-build) services to relocate and expand ACell’s distribution center and repurpose the vacated area to increase its office and research and development program. ACell was at capacity in its current building and leased an adjacent building to support future growth and provide decompression.

With a tight project budget, CRB’s in-house pre-construction group helped establish a budget and implement cost-efficient strategies to design to that budget. Additionally, the planning of this project included provisions for a future 10,000-square-foot medical training facility.

Phase I of the project included relocating and expanding the product packaging and distribution operations to an adjacent building. This allowed CRB to introduce new and contemporary interior design concepts for the relocated program. Open ceilings, glass offices and maximizing daylight deep into the floor plan were strategies used to enhance the occupant experience in this new space.

Phase II of the project reorganized the vacated 5,400-square-foot distribution space into an expanded office program and R&D lab space. This allowed ACell to decompress its current program, which was at capacity due to recent growth. The design team introduced new windows in the existing façade to bring more natural light into the occupied spaces. This space was further enhanced by introducing a glass conference room into the program to act as the “jewel” of the space and promote collaboration.
