Edwards Freeze Dryer #4

PFIZER, INC. Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan Square Footage: 4,625 Construction Cost: $5,000,000

Project Description:

CRB provided design and construction management services and teamed with Global Turn Key Services to relocate a freeze dryer from Pfizer's Puerto Rico site to Kalamazoo. The project was already on a very aggressive schedule; through the team's effort and CRB's integrated project delivery methods, the project design was completed two weeks ahead of schedule.

To accelerate construction and validation, instead of breaking the equipment down into many small pieces which would then have to be reassembled on site, it was transported on the largest cargo plane available in the world. Once on site, a section of the front of the building was removed in order to move the equipment into place.

In order to take advantage of an already scheduled shutdown of the facility, the design and construction was divided into multiple packages. This allowed utility tie-ins and work within clean spaces to occur without affecting the production operations. It was also necessary to perform very detailed routing of the utilities to be installed during the shutdown in order to ensure that all of the work could be completed within the shutdown period.

The period from project kickoff to completion of design was only seven weeks. This period included field investigation, multiple equipment procurement packages, and the preconstruction planning and coordination. CRB's engineering staff supported the project throughout the construction phase including additional site visits to provide technical support to the installing contractors.
